Final year for Playing for Keeps

This will be the final year for Hiawatha Park & Recreation’s annual fundraiser, Playing for Keeps.playing for keeps

For the past five years, local businesses and organizations have come together to support Hiawatha’s summer programs for kids, including Adventure Camp.

Adventure Camp is a summer day camp program that encourages fitness, creativity, friendship, team-building, and community service.

According to Friends of the Park vice-chair, Liz Neff, the programs can remain affordable because of the fundraiser.

Since this program would not fit into the city budget, it was decided the camp would be fully supported by this external fund, according to Neff. It was at that point the funds had a reason to have an official designation.

The event will be held Oct. 24, from 6-9 pm at the Hiawatha Community Center, 101 Emmons Street.

A variety of items are being donated for a live and silent auction, including tickets to the Shed Aquarium in Chicago, the Kansas City Royals, the Iowa Speedway, Iowa Children’s Museum, Theatre Cedar Rapids, AirFX, Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, Cedar Rapids Bowling Center, as well as an overnight ski package.

There will also be hors d’oeuvres, beer sampling, wine tasting, and music by local musicians.

Neff said a new kind of fundraiser is already being discussed for next year, but it’s too soon to say exactly what that will entail.
